Tashkent Zoo

A small menagerie existed earlier at the governor-general's dacha, as part of an art museum there. The zoo occupied roughly three hectares and by the late 1940s displayed more than 200 species of animals and birds. A government decision in 1994 launched construction of a new zoo with landscape-style enclosures on part of the botanical garden, which came into use in 1997 and cost the garden a quarter of its land.

The attraction is a cube-shaped biodome of 60,000 square feet, built by Meraas in the City Walk extension on Al Wasl Road and opened in 2016. Inside, a man-made rainforest holds around 3,000 plants and animals, birds, reptiles and fish among them. The animals live in open settings but may not be handled.

Opened in 1967, it lies roughly 25 km out from Vellore city and covers 25 hectares, taking in waterfalls. Amirthi is described as the largest forest in Tamil Nadu, rich in flora and fauna. Half the forest was cleared for tourism and the remainder developed as a wildlife sanctuary.

It began when Yong Kian Sen took up collecting crocodiles in 1963, and the family bought a hectare at Siburan for the farm in 1979. The grounds are laid out in sections for barking deer, bears, birds, crocodiles, deer, a fish pond, monitor lizards, owls and eagles, porcupines and wild boar.

Kaliningrad Zoo

The Königsberg zoological garden was founded in 1896 at the urging of a university professor, its backers including the dentistry-trade businessman Hermann Claass alongside other entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and municipal staff. It passed to the Soviet city in 1945 after the German surrender. It is grouped with the Moscow zoo of 1864 and the St Petersburg zoo of 1865 as among the oldest.

It holds the status of Russia's lead zoo, hosts the headquarters of the Euro-Asian zoo and aquarium association, and takes part in international work on the rehabilitation, reintroduction and captive breeding of rare species.

Colonial authorities granted the Agro Horticultural Society of Western India land at Sewri in 1835, and the botanical garden laid out there was named Victoria Gardens after Queen-Empress Victoria. After independence it was renamed for Jijamata, mother of the first Maratha emperor Shivaji, though the earlier name remains in wide use.

Gift animals from foreign leaders and members of the public numbered some 400 by 2001, and every elephant there traces back to one presented by Ho Chi Minh in 1959.

The park lies inside Kurumbapatty reserve forest at the foot of the Shervaroy hills, on gentle ground of bamboo stands, woodland and streams that run for much of the year. What opened in 1981 was only a small museum, the site being enlarged later to 69 hectares. Monkeys are the principal draw of the collection, and an elephant named Andal, aged 58, is also kept.

Mandai Wildlife Reserve operates five parks, this one alongside River Wonders, Bird Paradise, Rainforest Wild ASIA and the Singapore Zoo. Rather than reversing animals' cycles inside a nocturnal house, the whole open-air zoo simply runs from 7pm to midnight. It takes up 35 ha of secondary rainforest beside Upper Seletar Reservoir and the Singapore Zoo, cost S$63 million to build and was formally opened on 26 May 1994.

Dubai Dolphinarium

Dubai Municipality opened it on 21 May 2008, with government patronage and support, in Creek Park in Bur Dubai, close to Children's City. Its purpose was set as public entertainment together with education about dolphins, seals and other marine creatures, contact with such mammals being expected to spur younger people to protect marine life and the environment.
