Yerevan Zoo and its collection

Yerevan Zoo, opened in 1940, is a zoo in Երևան, Armenia.

The zoo occupies 35 hectares at the foot of hills in the south-east of the city and currently holds roughly 3,000 individuals of 300 species.

History

Plans were floated in the 1930s, though the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR did not order its establishment until 1940, and construction then ran from 1941 to 1950. The first grounds measured 3 hectares and held some 20 local animals and birds. A further rebuilding in 1975 stretched the site to 35 hectares and introduced species from Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Animals and collection

Regional species on show include the Syrian brown bear, bezoar goat, mouflon, red deer, black vulture and vipers. The collection also takes in an Indian elephant called Hrantik.

Conservation and approach

Stated aims cover gene pool preservation, captive breeding of rare species, acclimatisation research, disease prevention and public education. The zoo partners the FPWC, which has leased about 839 hectares near the Khosrov reserve for rehabilitation and reintroduction work.
