Kabul Zoo — Zoo in Kabul

Kabul Zoo and its collection

Kabul Zoo, opened in 1967, is a zoo in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The public gate is on Asmayi Road, facing the traffic police headquarters. Roughly a million people visit each year. The director is Aziz Gul Saqeb.

History

The zoo opened in 1967 with an emphasis on Afghan wildlife, and at its height held over 500 animals and drew some 150,000 visitors in 1972. Civil war in the 1990s left the aquarium shelled, and fighters ate the deer and rabbits.

What the venue says

  • statue of Marjan at the entrance
  • While there are small local vendors or kiosks inside or immediately outside selling light snacks and water, many visitors choose to bring their own bottled water and provisions, or dine at restaurants in central Kabul before or after their visit.
  • Street parking and informal spaces are available nearby around the Deh Mazang area, though traffic can be heavy during weekends and holidays.
  • Paving and pathways can vary, and visitors with mobility requirements may find some unpaved or uneven terrain typical of older public parks in the region.
