Jaipur Zoo and its collection

Jaipur Zoo, opened in 1877, is a zoo in Jaipur, Kanpur division.

The zoo dates from 1877 and stands close to the Albert Hall Museum and the Ram Nivas Garden. It holds roughly 550 animals of 50 species.

Animals and collection

Reptile holdings were counted at 52 gharials, 11 crocodiles, 23 turtles and 14 tortoises. The deer stock is dominated by chital, of which 84 were recorded.

Exhibits

The grounds are split in two, with mammals on one side and birds and reptiles on the other.

Conservation and approach

A gharial breeding farm set up in 1999 ranks as the fourth largest in the country. Breeding programmes for gharial, chital and crocodile are run with the Central Zoo Authority and the state government.
