Mysore Zoo and its collection

Mysore Zoo, opened in 1892, is a zoo in Mysuru, Kanpur division.

The zoo spreads over 157 acres about 700 metres from Mysore Palace and is the oldest in the country. It holds more than 168 species.

History

It grew out of the private menagerie of Chamaraja Wadiyar X, established in 1892 on 10 acres of the Summer Palace grounds. Within a decade it had been enlarged to 45 acres, and enclosures built then remain in service. Having been the Palace Zoo, it was renamed Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in 1909.

Animals and collection

Ten elephants are kept, more than at any other zoo in the country, and 34 have lived there over time; five green anacondas came from Colombo Zoo. It is the only zoo in the country holding chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, white rhinos and cheetahs.

• There are two main pay-and-park lots managed near the facility. One is directly opposite the main zoo gate, and a larger parking area sits roughly 100 to 400 metres away near the exhibition grounds.
• The terrain is smooth and mostly flat, featuring wheelchair-friendly ramps and accessible entrances across all main exhibits.
• The battery-operated vehicles offer excellent assistance for individuals with limited mobility.
• The park provides dedicated child-care/breastfeeding rooms at three distinct locations along the path for families.
