Almaty Zoo and its collection

Almaty Zoological Park, opened in 1936, is a zoo in Almaty, Almaty Province, Kazakhstan.

Among Kazakhstan's oldest and largest zoological parks, it stands on ground at the eastern edge of Gorky Park, a location chosen by the hunter Murzakhan Tolebayev.

History

In January 1935 the Kazakh SSR's Council of People's Commissars ruled that a zoo should be set up without delay, and the hunter Murzakhan Tolebayev selected the ground for it. News emerged in 2016 that seven snow leopards, a Red Book species given by zoos abroad, had died, earlier losses having been concealed from the public; management put the deaths down to improper husbandry and nobody faced sanction. The polar bear Alkor died on 8 December 2020, one day after his 31st birthday, following a steady decline in his health over the previous two months.
