Khao Kheow Open Zoo and its collection
Khao Kheow Open Zoo, opened in 1978, is a zoo in Chonburi, Thailand.
The zoo now covers about 1,976 acres and holds over 8,000 animals in more than 300 species, ranking second largest in Asia. A pygmy hippo calf called Moo Deng was born there in 2024.
History
It was established in 1974 on roughly 200 acres of hill country because Dusit Zoo had too many animals, and opened to the public in 1978. In 1984 the state zoological park body, under the environment ministry, approved growth to about 1,000 acres.

- There is ample parking space available near the main entrance gates for cars, motorbikes, and tour vans.
- The zoo features wheelchair-accessible ramps and paved pathways around major exhibit areas, major show arenas, and the main central hubs.
- However, because of the park’s massive scale and hilly terrain, renting a golf cart or private vehicle is strongly recommended for visitors with mobility considerations.
