Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, opened in 1973, is a zoo in Patna, Kanpur division.

The plant collection exceeds 300 species of trees, herbs and shrubs. Over 36,000 people came on New Year's Day 2022 alone.

History

It was set up in 1969 as a botanical garden, after the then governor of Bihar, Nityanand Kanungo, released nearly 34 acres from the grounds of Governor House. From 1973 it combined botanical garden and zoo, opening to the public as a zoo that year. The Bihar government renamed it in 1981 for Sanjay Gandhi, who had died the year before.

Animals and collection

It holds over 800 animals of roughly 110 species, ranging from tigers and clouded leopards to gharials and Indian rhinoceros.

Conservation and approach

The park works on breeding and conserving endangered species, with some success reported.
