Taipei Zoo and its collection

Taipei Zoo, opened in 1914, is a zoo in Taipei City, Taiwan.

The grounds cover 165 hectares, more than 90 of them developed. Two pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, arrived from mainland China in 2008 as a gesture of unity.

History

It was founded in 1914 as Maruyama Zoo, on a hill in a northern suburb during Japanese rule. The colonial government purchased the site a year later and ran it as a public park. Control passed to the city government after the Second World War.

Exhibits

A section by the entrance shows native fauna, among them clouded leopard, Eurasian otter, black bear, macaque, sika deer, pangolin and wild boar, while a rainforest section covers Southeast Asian species along with some South American ones. The desert section holds addax, African wild ass and Bactrian camel. A children's area allows contact with alpacas, chickens, donkeys, rabbits and pigs, and a stag beetle sculpture marks the entrance to the insect house.
