Chiang Mai Zoo and its collection

Chiang Mai Zoo, opened in 1957, is a zoo in Suthep, Amphoe Mueang, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Billed as the region's first commercial zoo, it dates from 16 June 1977. It is privately run and has two large aquariums.

History

US military advisers arrived in 1950 to train border tribal police. Harold Mason Young, born in Burma to American missionaries, began tending injured animals, and the collection he built up drew visitors. The province allotted 24 acres at the foot of Doi Suthep, and visitors were admitted from 1957.

Animals and collection

Some 400 animal species are represented, among them Humboldt penguins, koalas, Indian rhinoceros, gaur and Indochinese tigers. Two Asian elephants are kept, and three giant pandas were held in the past.

Exhibits

A 133-metre underwater tunnel, then the longest of its kind, opened on 28 October 2008.
