National Zoological Park Delhi and its collection

National Zoological Park Delhi, opened in 1959, is a zoo in Delhi, Kanpur division.

History

A zoo was proposed in 1951, and the Indian Board for Wildlife formed a committee on the plan the following year. Central government was to build it and then hand it to the city as a going concern. It was inaugurated in November 1959.

Exhibits

The mammal collection covers Asiatic lion, barasingha, gaur, blackbuck, four-horned antelope and golden jackal, among others. Reptiles on show include gharial, Indian cobra, Indian python, star tortoise and mugger crocodile.

Conservation and approach

Breeding programmes run under the Central Zoo Authority cover the Asiatic lion, swamp deer, red junglefowl, brow-antlered deer, Indian rhino and Bengal tiger. Brow-antlered deer have been bred from a pair obtained in 1962, with stock going on to Mysore, Junagarh, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kanpur and Ahmedabad.
