Shanghai Zoo and its collection

Shanghai Zoo is a zoo in Shanghai, Shanghai, People's Republic of China.

The zoo sits near Hongqiao township and falls administratively within Changning District. It was earlier called Xijiao Park, or Western Suburbs Park, a name still in everyday local use.

History

The land was first laid out as livery stables in 1890. Merchants bought the stables in 1914 and turned the ground into the Hung-Jao Golf Club in 1916. The property was taken back by the new government in 1953, after the Communist Party took the city in 1949.
