Zoo Brno and its collection

Zoo Brno, opened in 1953, is a zoo in Brno, Czech Republic.

The zoo occupies 65 hectares near the Brno reservoir and holds 2,200 animals in 400 species. It concentrates on hoofed animals, tigers and primates, and counts the rearing of polar bears among its greatest breeding achievements. It is operated by a municipal organisation that combines the zoo with a hobby-activities station.

History

A society to set up a zoo in Brno formed in 1935, but the founding charter was signed only on 6 May 1950.

Exhibits

Modernisation in the 21st century began with the Tygří skály pavilion for tigers and leopards, its interior imitating a rock cave. Enclosures are paired with indigenous buildings: a Haida cabin by the Canadian wolves, tipis by the bison and a Mongolian yurt by the Przewalski horses. Other areas take in polar bears, Beringia, an Africa section with Kalahari and Congo lions, an Exotarium, a Tropical Kingdom, Subtropics, a children's zoo and a native-species section, with the hilly wooded terrain exploited for rocks, waterfalls and huts.
