Olomouc Zoo and its collection

Olomouc Zoo, opened in 1952, is a zoo in Olomouc, Olomouc Region, Czech Republic.

Some 42.5 hectares carry roughly 1,861 animals in 354 species. The site lies in woodland in the foothills of the Nízký Jeseník and is reachable by city transport. It belongs to the Czech-Slovak zoo union, EAZA and WAZA.

History

A stopgap animal corner once stood in Smetanovy sady, holding red deer, roe deer, peafowl, budgerigars and pheasants. Public demand prompted the regional national committee to task the natural science department of the regional museum with enlarging it, and in 1952 the Olomouc Biological Society formed a preparatory committee for establishing a zoological garden. Svatý Kopeček was picked over other candidate sites, among them the city centre and the area of the Hejčín sugar refinery.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Kočkodan husarský, Želva ostruhatá, Žirafa Rothschildova, Zebra Chapmanova and Plameňák růžový.

Exhibits

The kangaroo enclosure is walked through, so that the animals are seen at close quarters.
