Zoo Zlín and its collection

Zoo Zlín, opened in 1948, is a zoo in Zlín, Zlín Region, Czech Republic.

The city of Zlín is the founding authority of this contributory organisation. The British zoo assessor Anthony Sheridan placed it fourth among the zoos of the former Eastern European countries and, in a 2022 report, among the ten European gardens that had developed most over a decade.

History

Count Josef Jan ze Seilernu began breeding pheasants on the Lešná rise in 1804. In 1806 he had a baroque château put up in the pheasantry to replace the uninhabitable Lukov castle, and it was finished in 1809–1810. The elephant group now comprises the females Kali (born 1995) and Zola (1996), the bull Jack (1993) and the calf Zyqarri, born in 2021 and the first African elephant calf born in the country.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include kapybary, tučňáky, surikaty and kotulů.

Exhibits

Gibonika is a large heated indoor house built for silvery gibbons. An exhibit for New Guinea singing dogs, a species few European zoos keep, opened in 2012, and a ray pavilion followed in 2014. The Guayanas section took over from the former Amazonie in 2018.
