Jihlava Zoo and its collection

Jihlava Zoo, opened in 1957, is a zoo in Jihlava, Vysočina Region, Czech Republic.

It lies in the Jihlávka river valley right beside the town centre, among ponds, wooded slopes, meadows and rocks. Nearly 260 exotic species are kept, about 1,500 individuals in all, some of them threatened with extinction, and the specialities are cats, monkeys and reptiles. It belongs to EAZA and to the Czech and Slovak zoo union.

History

The idea came in 1957 from Oldřich Vávra, a culture inspector who wanted an animal corner in the wooded Heulos valley. He teamed up with Jindřich Weiss, head of stagehands at the local theatre.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include tamarín sedlový, kobylka kápová, dytík velký, gekon psychedelický and straka modrá.

Exhibits

The African savanna exhibit sits behind the new main entrance in the western part, and the Australian farm building copies real settler farmhouses. Hacienda Escondido groups the South American enclosures with an Amazon fish pavilion and small clawed monkeys, among them tamarins, marmosets, golden lion tamarin and two-toed sloth. The cat house pairs grassed outdoor runs and water with indoor winter quarters, while other areas include a Himalaya exhibit and a Hokkaido garden of azaleas and Japanese maples around a bridged pond.
