Tiergarten Schönbrunn and its collection

Tiergarten Schönbrunn, opened in 1752, is a zoo in Wien, Wien, Austria.

Founded in 1752 by the Habsburgs within the grounds of Schönbrunn palace, the zoo occupies 17 hectares and holds about 7,800 animals of 700 species. Attendance has topped two million every year since 2006. The zoologist Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck has been director since 2020.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Großen Pandas, Humboldtpinguine, Koalas, Kattas and Elefanten.

Exhibits

The polar bear complex opened in 2014 with a diving pool five metres deep for underwater viewing. The Polarium has a glazed panel 13 metres across onto the sea lion pool. From 2005 to 2023 one building held 14 terrariums of camouflaging insects.

Conservation and approach

The zoo keeps the European studbooks for the southern and northern rockhopper penguins and for the Fiji iguana. It is one of a handful of European zoos showing giant pandas.
