How listings are chosen

This directory is generated from a single database that merges records from several independent sources, rather than trusting any one of them alone. A listing is only published once at least two independent sources agree it exists, or an accreditation body vouches for it directly — so what you see here is what the underlying sources agree on, not an editor's judgement call.

No placement in this directory can be bought, and nothing on this site is sponsored.

Lists are ordered alphabetically or by how complete a record is, never by a score. Where an order would imply a judgement the data cannot support, the page says so.

Data accuracy & sourcing

Each listing merges records from several independently licensed sources rather than trusting any one of them alone. Accreditation status comes from the associations that grant it, such as AZA and WAZA. Opening hours, ticket prices and on-site facilities are read from each venue's own website. The exact sources and licences behind the rest of the data — generated from what is actually present, not hand-maintained — are listed below.

Every value carries the source it came from, when it was fetched and the licence it arrived under. A value that fails validation is kept in the database and left off the page: an empty field is correct, a wrong one is not.

On accreditation and welfare

Membership of a recognised zoological association carries welfare standards and periodic inspection behind it, so where an association publishes its member list this directory records it and shows it on the venue's page. 1,304 venues are listed; the badge appears on those an association vouches for.

That is a record of who accredits whom, not an assessment. This directory does not inspect venues, does not rate their animal welfare, and does not exclude a venue for lacking accreditation — the absence of a badge means no association list named it, which is not the same as a judgement.
