Tiergarten Delitzsch and its collection

Tiergarten Delitzsch, opened in 1968, is a zoo in Delitzsch, Germany.

Set in the Lober floodplain northwest of the town park, the site has existed since 1968. About four hectares hold roughly 600 animals of 120 species. Low barriers of stumps, roots and boulders are all that separate visitors from the naturalistic enclosures.

History

The park grew out of the hobby of a cooperative farmer, Franz Kirsch, who from 1960 had kept more than 22 duck and goose species in a disused sandpit at Klitzschmar and who became its first director. Ground was broken on the present site on 1 May 1967.

Animals and collection

Species held include olive baboons, tufted capuchins, Bennett's wallabies, lesser flamingos, crowned cranes and Bactrian camels, with eland and zebras in an Africa enclosure overlooked by a viewing platform of roughly four metres. The park also takes part in the breeding project for the threatened European mink.
