Wildpark Leipzig
Wildpark Leipzig and its collection
Wildpark Leipzig is a zoo in Leipzig, Germany.
The park lies in the Leipzig floodplain forest and measures 42 hectares. Admission is free, and about 25 species and 250 animals of central European origin are shown. Red, fallow and mouflon deer share one large enclosure, and there are spacious pens for roe deer, wild boar, elk and wisent.
History
In 1904 a mill owner from Connewitz, Richard Jacob, gave the city council four fallow deer, which were penned at Stempel, but frequent flooding made that first site unsuitable. In 1906 ground near the Heidaer meadows was fenced and the grown herd was moved there. A shelter serving milk, tea, mineral water and baked goods opened in 1912, and a park restaurant was built in 1922.
