Zoo Leipzig and its collection
Zoo Leipzig, opened in 1878, is a zoo in Leipzig, Germany.
A rebuilding programme is running until 2028, the year of the zoo's 150th anniversary. In Anthony Sheridan's ranking of European zoos it is placed second, behind Tiergarten Schönbrunn.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include Weißnackenkranich, Panda and Gorilla.
Exhibits
The lion area Makasi Simba, which dates from 2001, covers about 1,400 square metres, 825 of them outdoors, and a gorge for sloth bears was built in 2001-02 on the ground of a former gibbon enclosure. Pongoland, also opened in 2001, was built jointly with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. The congress hall, commissioned in 1910 by the founder Ernst Pinkert, reopened in 2015, and South American enclosures have been under construction across the years 2015 to 2026.

Conservation and approach
Four international studbooks are kept here and seven European breeding programmes are coordinated from it. The former director Peter Müller has run the international tiger studbook since 1973, a register that lists more than 9,000 animals.
