Zoologischer Garten Basel AG and its collection

Zoologischer Garten Basel, opened in 1874, is a zoo in Basel, Switzerland.

The zoo lies in the Basel-Bachletten quarter on the river Birsig and covers around 11 hectares. In 2014 it held 7,017 animals in 628 species, among them 58 mammal, 88 bird, 41 reptile, 10 amphibian, 284 fish and 147 invertebrate species.

History

The plan for a zoological garden was discussed in the Ornithologische Gesellschaft in the early 1870s, though the originator of the idea is unknown. The society issued an appeal to the citizens of Basel in 1873 to take part in the founding, and the zoo opened in 1874; it is the oldest in Switzerland. Breeding successes with Indian rhinoceros, pygmy hippopotamus and western lowland gorilla later made it known beyond Switzerland.

A dedicated multi-story parking garage is located immediately adjacent to the zoo grounds for arriving motorists.
The zoo grounds feature flat, well-paved, and wide pathways that are easily navigable for strollers, wheelchairs, and mobility devices.
