Zoologischer Garten Schwerin is a zoo in Schwerin, Germany.

About 25 hectares lie between the southern shore of Lake Schwerin, the Fauler See and the Großer Dreesch estate. The zoo is operated as a non-profit limited company, and recent annual attendance has been above 200,000.

History

The zoo opened on 24 April 1956 with 17 animals and a single keeper. An Africa enclosure for Rothschild's giraffes, Chapman's zebras and meerkats was added at the entrance in 2005.

Animals and collection

More than 2,100 animals of 144 species are kept. European breeding programmes are joined for 15 of them, among them Asiatic lion, white rhino, Amur tiger and giraffe.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Rote Liste Zentrum, Löwenlodge and Baumhaus.
