Wildpark-MV and its collection
Wildpark-MV is a zoo in Güstrow, Germany.
It lies east of the town and south of the Nebel, within 200 hectares of parkland.
History
A first local animal park opened in 1936 on the Paradieswiese with three fallow deer, later holding demoiselle cranes, golden pheasants, peafowl, ornamental ducks, squirrels, heath sheep and roe deer; it was dissolved during the Second World War. The idea of a replacement arose in the mid-1950s between March, the head of forestry, and Müller, the estate owner of Bölkow, and the present park was created in 1959 as one of East Germany's many small local animal gardens. After reunification it was greatly enlarged and redesigned on a new concept, and in 2003 it served as an off-site venue for the international horticultural show at Rostock.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include Wölfe, Bären, Luchse, Eulen and Frettchen.
Exhibits
A shared predator enclosure of five hectares opened in June 2009, and fallow deer occupy a walk-through enclosure of eight hectares. The owl wood holds tawny, long-eared and eagle owls. A nature aquarium in the environmental education centre shows only native fish and is billed as the largest in the north.
