Tierpark Wismar and its collection

Tierpark Wismar is a zoo in Wismar, Germany.

The long, largely wooded site lies in the Köppernitz valley and adjoins the Bürgerpark, venue of the state garden show in 2002.

History

It has stood on the present site since 1978, originally as a municipal operation, and has been run since 1991 by a non-profit association. Regrouping and merging enclosures gave individual animals more room.

Animals and collection

About 50 species are kept, mainly European with a few exotics. Ostriches and red and fallow deer occupy large paddocks, the one for fallow deer open to walk into.

Exhibits

Lynx have an open enclosure viewed from a raised platform, and black-tailed prairie dogs have burrowed into a freely accessible lawn. An island in a pond at the southern end holds ring-tailed lemurs and can be entered on foot. A walk-in alpaca enclosure went up in 2016, a half-timbered poultry house is being built and a walk-in aviary is planned.
