Philadelphia Zoo and its collection
Philadelphia Zoological Garden, opened in 1874, is a zoo in Philadelphia, United States.
No earlier institution in the United States counts as a true zoo. It opened on 1 July 1874 with a thousand animals in the collection and admission set at 25 cents.
History
American enthusiasm for founding a zoo followed the opening of London Zoo to the public in 1847, and William Camac, who saw it during his European travels in the 1850s, pressed the case for one in Philadelphia on his return. Incorporation of the Zoological Society of Philadelphia came from the state legislature on 21 March 1859, the same day a charter was granted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. War then held matters up, and the gates opened only on 1 July 1874.
