Staten Island Zoo — Zoo in Staten Island
Staten Island Zoo and its collection
Staten Island Zoo, opened in 1936, is a zoo in Staten Island, United States.
The zoo is open all year apart from Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
History
Also known as Barrett Park, its story is traced to three local war figures, Colonel Edward Harden, Colonel Richard Penn Smith and Major Clarence Barrett. In the 1800s two of those officers had estates facing each other across Clove Road.
Animals and collection
The collection was originally centred on reptiles, above all the snakes of its Serpentarium, and the rattlesnake holdings are still rated among the most complete on the continent. It now numbers over 1,550 animals in more than 360 species.
