Brandywine Zoo and its collection

Brandywine Zoo, opened in 1905, is a zoo in Wilmington, United States.

The zoo is run by Delaware's Division of Parks and Recreation, with backing from the Delaware Zoological Society.

History

Wilmington's parks were planned by a board of ten unpaid men, whose work produced Brandywine, Rockford and Canby; the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted was engaged to pick the sites and advised buying ground on both banks of the Brandywine. An Amur tiger, Zhanna, arrived in 2011 from the Saint Louis Zoo and moved on to the Bronx Zoo in January 2017 under the AZA breeding plan.

Animals and collection

The collection covers Andean condors, a caracal, red pandas, a giant anteater, bald eagles and lemurs. Part of it goes off display over the winter.
