Lion Country Safari and its collection

Lion Country Safari, opened in 1967, is a zoo in Loxahatchee, United States.

More than 1,000 animals are kept across seven sections of a 4-mile preserve, alongside a 33-acre amusement park. USA Travel Guide placed it third among the nation's zoos in 2009.

History

It was founded in 1967 by a group of entrepreneurs who wanted families to be able to get an African safari experience, and claims to have been the country's first cageless zoo. Year-round warmth made South Florida a suitable site. Early on it ran its own 2 ft narrow gauge railroad, the Everglade Express.
