Jungle Island and its collection

Jungle Island, opened in 1936, is a zoo in Miami, United States.

The attraction reopened after major renovations following damage from Hurricane Irma. Current draws include pop-up waterslides, an outdoor wind tunnel, zip lines, escape rooms and a Nerf battle stadium.

History

The predecessor attraction, Parrot Jungle, occupied 20 acres south of the city at Killian Drive and South Red Road and was founded in 1936 by Francis and Louise Scherr, making it among the area's oldest tourist attractions. Scherr ran a feed and supply store in Homestead and was taken with the idea of birds flying free, having been told by Drummond, when exasperated, to start his own jungle. After the old site was bought for Pinecrest Gardens in 2002 the attraction moved from suburban Pinecrest to a spot just east of downtown.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include wallabies, sloth, capybara, lemur and flamingo.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Treewalk Village, Everglades Habitat and Manu Aviary.
