Zoo Miami and its collection

Zoo Miami, opened in 1948, is a zoo in Miami, United States.

The zoo is divided into five exhibit sections, covering Florida, Asia, Africa, the Amazon and Australia.

History

Its origins trace to 1948, when a travelling show stranded nearby traded two black bears, a goat and three monkeys against roughly $270 of truck repairs. Those six animals founded the Crandon Park Zoo on Key Biscayne. In 1980 it moved, as Miami MetroZoo, onto the former Naval Air Station Richmond site south-west of the city.

Animals and collection

The Asian section holds Bornean orangutans, Asian elephants, Indian rhinoceros, Sumatran tigers and Komodo dragons, among others. The Australian area shows koalas, southern cassowaries, hairy-nosed wombats and tree-kangaroos.

Exhibits

The entrance area carries a canopy structure, joined ticket booths and shop, and a flamingo exhibit. An indoor Conservation Action Center with interactive displays sits where the main paths meet. Amazon and Beyond opened on 6 December 2008 in the north-western corner.
