Butterfly World — Zoo in Coconut Creek

Butterfly World and its collection

Butterfly World, opened in 1988, is a zoo in Coconut Creek, United States.

It opened in 1988 and has been described as the biggest butterfly park worldwide and the first of its type in the Western Hemisphere. Roughly 20,000 live butterflies are kept on site.

History

The founder, Ronald Boender, took up butterfly rearing at home after a career in electrical engineering, and in 1984 he founded MetaScience to supply farmed butterflies to zoos and universities. A trip to England in 1985, on which he met Clive Farrell of the London Butterfly House, prompted him to build a facility of his own.

Exhibits

The Tropical Rain Forest Aviary contains a waterfall, tropical planting and free-flying birds. A hanging garden area displays pupae in cases as the butterflies emerge. The Secret Garden holds one of the world's biggest collections of flowering passion flower vines.

Things to do include Lorikeet Encounter and South Florida Adventure Pass.

Conservation and approach

Passiflora Society International was founded on the premises to circulate research into passion flowers, which butterflies feed on. The park also had a hand in establishing a laboratory for endangered species at the University of Florida that carries the Boender name and has worked on releases of the Schaus swallowtail.
