Antwerp Zoo and its collection

Antwerp Zoo, opened in 1843, is a zoo in Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium.

Opened on 21 July 1843, it is the oldest zoo in Belgium and one of the oldest in the world. The grounds stand beside Antwerpen-Centraal station on Koningin Astridplein. In 2014 the collection numbered 425 species.

Conservation and approach

The Centre for Research and Conservation is a scientific conservation research centre founded by the KMDA itself. Its research runs at the zoo and at Planckendael as well as internationally, including BioBrazil in Brazil and Projet Grands Singes in Cameroon.

Drivers can utilize nearby multi-story parking facilities (such as Parking Astridplein, Parking Roosevelt, or Parking Diamant) and often secure discounted parking rates by having their tickets validated at the zoo gate.
The zoo is largely accessible for wheelchair users and strollers, featuring paved pathways throughout.
While some historic buildings have entry steps, alternative accessible routes are clearly marked, and stroller rentals are available at the entrance.
