BestZoo — Zoo in Best

BestZoo and its collection

BestZoo, opened in 1930, is a zoo in Best.

A privately owned zoo holding around 70 species, four of which are covered by European breeding programmes run under EAZA.

History

The elder van Laarhoven founded it in 1930 under the name Vleut the Zoo, and his sons inherited it in 1982 and enlarged the collection. By 2007 it had been renamed and had passed to the Zodiac Zoos group, which set about making the enclosures more natural. Zodiac sold it on to Jos Nooren in 2010 with that work unfinished.

Animals and collection

The cats range from leopard and jaguar to smaller species such as caracal, serval and ocelot. Reptiles kept include tortoises, crocodilians and snakes.
