Zoo Osnabrück and its collection

Zoo Osnabrück, opened in 1936, is a zoo in Osnabrück, Germany.

The grounds cover 23.5 hectares and hold 3,186 animals of 299 species. They lie on the wooded slopes of the Schölerberg, which is the source of the zoo's forest-zoo nickname. Attendance passed a million in 2022, as it had in preceding years.

History

The zoo was established in July 1935 as an animal garden for local fauna, with donations paying for the founding plan. Its first three animals were a badger, a fox and a bear, and an aviary, an owl tower, a deer paddock and an aquarium came soon after. Visitors were admitted from the summer of 1936.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Waschbären, Zebramangusten, Erdmännchen, Schimpansen and Ratten.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Takamanda, Wasserwelten, Manitoba, Kajanaland and Angkor Wat.

Things to do

Things to do include Dino tours, Wild Explorer VR experience, Knowledge Stand and Birthday parties.

Inside the grounds, visitors can find options ranging from the main zoo restaurant (Zoogaststätte) to casual kiosks and snack spots like the Safari Eck.
The zoo features dedicated visitor parking directly near the main entrance off Klaus-Strick-Weg, making arrival straightforward for drivers.
