Tierpark Herford and its collection

Tierpark Herford is a zoo in Herford, Germany.

History

The collection was started in 1952 at Schweicheln-Bermbeck by a joiner, Walter Bobel, the trigger being a white-nosed guenon sent from Africa in thanks for a Great Dane shipped out. A woolly monkey and other, mostly native animals followed. By 1954 woodland on Stadtholzstraße had been leased from the town and the collection moved there.

Animals and collection

Three hectares held 650 animals of 90 species as of 2022, among them ring-tailed lemurs and mangalitsa pigs, both of which have bred there, with waterfowl kept on a pond fed by the Steinsiekbach stream. Two lynx arrived at the end of 2016, and Himalayan monal, white-eared turaco, Canary lizards, mara, mouflon, common pheasant, wildcats and a Mexican milk snake were new for the 2017 season.

Its exhibits include Europäische Waldtiere, Reptilienhaus, Eulenschule and Streichelwiese.
