Vogelpark Heiligenkirchen and its collection

Vogelpark Heiligenkirchen is a zoo in Detmold, Germany.

The birds are kept in large, partly walk-in aviaries and pens ringed by flower beds, and direct contact with the animals is put first.

History

Kurt Eckstein hunted for a site through the 1960s for the exotic and native birds he kept privately. Public opening came in 1969, then as a bird and flower park, helped along by local interest and the village mayor. The park is still owned by the founding family.

Animals and collection

Around 1,000 animals of 300 species are held, most of them birds, among them pelicans, storks, cranes, peafowl, toucans and hornbills. The smallest is the king quail, the smallest of the galliforms, whose chicks are the size of bumblebees, while cassowary and emus are the largest birds kept.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Papageienvoliere and Wellensittichvoliere.

Things to do include Feeding with the keeper, Zoo school and Petting zoo.

Conservation and approach

The park breeds the great hornbill and the Bolivian squirrel monkey within the European conservation breeding programme. It also works through the European Studbook Foundation on kea, Von der Decken's hornbill and yellow-billed stork.
