Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten and its collection

Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten Stuttgart is a zoo in Stuttgart, Germany.

Some 11,000 animals are kept on about 30 hectares, and the roughly 1,200 species held make it level with the Zoologischer Garten Berlin for the largest species count in Germany. The botanical side shows more than 8,500 plant species. Attendance runs to roughly 1.8 million visitors a year.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Bonobos, Seelöwen, Dscheladas, Mähnenschafe and Löwen.

Exhibits

Banded mongooses were rehoused on the former giant tortoise outdoor area beside the crocodile hall, and the house for small mammals, birds and insectivores is divided into savanna and tropical rainforest zones. The sea lion basin began life as the royal crescent lake and now holds a breeding group of California sea lions, while aviaries opened on the royal subtropical terraces in 1981. A juvenile-rearing house followed in 1982, towards which the supporters' association contributed 500,000 D-Mark during a financially tight period.
