Zoo Heidelberg and its collection
Zoo Heidelberg is a zoo in Heidelberg, Germany.
The zoo covers 10.2 hectares and drew just under 500,000 visitors in 2015. It is run as a non-profit company, Tiergarten Heidelberg gGmbH, with Klaus Wünnemann as director since 1998. It takes part in several European breeding programmes.
History
The zoo was inaugurated in 1934 on a site in the west of the Neuenheim district and opened officially that November. The ground had been a new central cemetery, begun in 1914 and later used as a soldiers' cemetery, but was abandoned after the groundwater table rose following canalisation works on the Neckar from the mid-1920s.
Animals and collection
At the inventory of January 2019 the zoo held about 2,478 animals in 155 species. The great ape house holds four chimpanzees and three western lowland gorillas.
Exhibits
A petting-zoo section founded in 2021 holds threatened native livestock breeds, among them Hinterwälder cattle, Rhön sheep and Rotbunte Husumer pigs.
