Zoo Landau in der Pfalz, opened in 1904, is a zoo in Landau, Germany.

History

The present site was taken over in July 1904 by the Verein Vogelfreund, which built the first bird houses, and the city has owned the zoo since 1920. It was rebuilt after being destroyed in the Second World War. Further buildings followed during the south-west German garden exhibition of 1949, among them the present free-flight hall, then a plant show house.

Animals and collection

The zoo keeps white-crowned mangabeys, held in Germany only here and at Duisburg and Osnabrück. It also holds the only Madagascar big-headed turtles in a European zoo.

Conservation and approach

The zoo is a partner of the IUCN initiative Countdown 2010: Save Biodiversity and a partner zoo of Stiftung Artenschutz, and it supports Pro Luchs and Aktion Pfalzstorch. It takes part in WAPCA, which works to protect Ghanaian rainforests and against bushmeat, cooperates with the Fundacion Otway to protect Humboldt penguins in Chile, protects the Forêt du Day juniper and box forest in Djibouti with Djibouti Nature, and supports the Voronosy wetland project in Madagascar.
