Wildpark Mainz-Gonsenheim and its collection

Wildpark Mainz-Gonsenheim is a zoo in Mainz, Germany.

The site covers only about three hectares but matters to the city as local recreation ground, and city figures put annual visitors in the several hundred thousands. It also includes a rescue station that treats sick or injured wild birds.

History

The park was founded in the 1950s by the local hunters' association, with only deer and wild boar at first. The city later took it over and expanded the collection from the 1970s onwards. From 2001 the run-down site was rebuilt step by step on husbandry and ecological principles.

Animals and collection

Large enclosures hold mainly red, fallow and mouflon deer together with wild boar, alongside West African pygmy goats, pot-bellied pigs, wildcats, raccoons, waterfowl, owls and pheasants. A children's mini-zoo keeps rabbits and guinea pigs.
