Zoo Neuwied and its collection

Zoo Neuwied is a zoo in Neuwied, Germany.

History

Visitors were first admitted in 1970, when the park was called Tierpark Hubertushof. Early breeding successes included the first bontebok bred in Germany and the first captive breeding of several parrot species anywhere.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Schimpanse, Löwe, Erdmännchen, Krokodil and Pinguin.

Exhibits

A South America hall named after Prince Maximilian zu Wied opened in 2018, and a walk-through aviary of about 1,000 square metres for Australian birds followed at the end of 2024. A new exotarium replaced the half-century-old reptile house in May 2011, and a paired crane facility was finished in 2023. Roughly 3.5 hectares are given over to eastern grey and Bennett's kangaroos kept alongside emus.

Things to do include Animal Schedule (keeper talks & training), Keeper Q&A session and Birthday parties.

Conservation and approach

A conservation levy introduced in 2022, paid voluntarily by visitors on admission, funds species projects in Germany and abroad. Among the beneficiaries are projects for the pacarana, the Ecuador amazon and the saiga antelope.
