Opel-Zoo (Von Opel Hessische Zoostiftung) and its collection

Opel-Zoo (Von Opel Hessische Zoostiftung), opened in 1956, is a zoo in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany.

Roughly 1,700 animals of 200 species from nearly every continent are kept. About 580,000 people visit each year, and the zoo is funded solely by ticket income and donations.

History

It was set up on the initiative of Georg von Opel as a research enclosure, under the name Kronberger Tiergarten, and three elephants arrived from Africa in its first year. Germany's first captive breeding of Mesopotamian fallow deer came in 1960. The zoo passed into a charitable foundation in 2007.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Elefanten, Giraffen, Zebras, Erdmänn­chen and Rote Pandas.

Exhibits

An African savanna area of more than 2.2 hectares opened in 2006. The giraffes have a free-run hall that visitors can see into, and zebras, wildebeest and impala share eighteen boxes of equal size.
