Wetheriggs Zoo and Animal Sanctuary — Zoo in Greta Bridge

Wetheriggs Zoo and Animal Sanctuary and its collection

Wetheriggs Zoo and Animal Sanctuary, opened in 2006, is a zoo in United Kingdom.

The site now sits on the A66 just outside Barnard Castle, County Durham. It accepts most kinds of animal, though not domestic cats or dogs, and runs on public donations.

History

It opened in 2006 on the old Wetheriggs Pottery site, set up by Terry Bowes, who had 45 years of zookeeping behind him. In 2008 it was renamed the Wetheriggs Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre, for work on recreating the Cumberland Pig and on rare poultry and native newts.

Animals and collection

Many of the residents are unwanted former pets and others were rescued from across the UK, the stock ranging from farm animals and poultry to skunks, tarantulas and reptiles. Some exotic animals are currently kept away from public view.

Exhibits
