Northumberland Zoo and its collection
Northumberland Zoo is a zoo in Morpeth, United Kingdom.
History
The zoo grew out of a tearoom that put poultry and livestock on its land in 2009. It opened in 2011 as Eshottheugh Animal Park, bringing in exotic species such as meerkats. It became Northumberland County Zoo in 2015, and the name was shortened to its present form in 2018.
Animals and collection
The collection covers Scottish wildcat, serval, snow leopard, Asian small-clawed otter and Arctic fox. Owls and raptors are kept in numbers, among them barn, tawny, snowy, Ural and great grey owls, a Harris's hawk and a buzzard.
Conservation and approach
Working alongside conservation groups, the zoo breeds harvest mice and white-clawed crayfish in a house devoted to native British species. It is one of only three zoos keeping Livingstone's fruit bats, and a pup arrived in 2023.
What the venue says
- Parking on-site is entirely free of charge for visitors, including coaches.
- The ground between the car park and the entrance consists of some loose stone, which visitors with pushchairs or wheelchairs should navigate with care.
