Blackpool Zoo, opened in 1972, is a zoo in Blackpool, United Kingdom.

History

The zoo opened in 1972 on the site of the former Stanley Park Aerodrome. Its orangutan housing reopened in 2014 after a rebuild costing one million pounds; the male Kawan arrived from Apenheul Primate Park in 2022, while Jingga transferred from Barcelona Zoo in 2017 and her son Jarang was born on site in 2023. The elephant scheme was the largest development spend in the zoo's history and used land that had not previously been built on.

Exhibits

Lemur Wood, opened in 1999, was the first walk-through enclosure on the site, and Gorilla Mountain followed in 2000 with six western lowland gorillas led by the silverback Bukavu. A dinosaur trail with 32 full-size models opened in 2005, and a walk-through for South American wildlife, including squirrel monkeys, in 2006. The sea lion pool dates from the 1970s and is the largest of its kind in Britain.
