Tierpark Sababurg — Zoo in Hofgeismar

Tierpark Sababurg and its collection

Tierpark Sababurg is a zoo in Hofgeismar, Germany.

At about 130 hectares it ranks among Europe's largest and oldest wildlife parks. Long oak avenues cross the grounds, with the Urwald Sababurg bordering to the west. Threatened native species are kept, the aim being appropriate conditions through spacious open enclosures.

History

The castle went up from 1334 as Zappenburg, and from 1490 Landgrave Wilhelm I had it rebuilt as a Renaissance hunting lodge with a stud, extensive horse paddocks and pasture growing below it over the following seventy years. Landgrave Wilhelm IV, keen on natural science, had the ground walled in between 1567 and 1571 with five kilometres of three-metre rubble stone wall. It was laid out as a Tiergarten in 1571 and has been known under its present name since 1973.
