Tierpark Neumünster and its collection

Tierpark Neumünster, opened in 1951, is a zoo in Neumünster, Germany.

Twenty-four wooded hectares hold about 700 animals across 100 mammal, bird and reptile species. The park belongs to the VdZ, the DWV and EAZA. As of 2021 it took part in 17 European breeding programmes and is noted for its breeding of European bison.

History

Townspeople founded the park in 1951 as a zoo for regional fauna. During the 1980s it was renamed and its concept broadened, with polar bears, Barbary macaques and Humboldt penguins added alongside natives such as seals, lynx, wildcats and wisent. Wolves were kept until 2015 and brown bears until 2018.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Eisbären, Berberaffen and Humboldt-Pinguine.

Exhibits

The polar bear Vitus, born at Rostock Zoo in December 2000, stands 3.60 m and is the largest in Germany. A newspaper report of November 2007 stated that the Berlin-born polar bear Knut legally belonged to the park.
