Tierpark Herborn — Zoo in Herborn

Tierpark Herborn and its collection

Tierpark Herborn is a zoo in Herborn, Germany.

The park belongs to the German wildlife enclosure association and to the DTG, and draws roughly 40,000 to 50,000 visitors a year. Trained keepers staff the collection, and the zoo now runs its own apprenticeships.

History

It began in 1966 as a bird park run by an association. In 2002 it was reconstituted as a charitable GmbH and scientific leadership was added, and the bird-park element of the name was dropped in January 2017. The grounds have grown from 0.95 to 2.45 hectares.

Around 60 bird species are kept, among them the Bali starling and the great green macaw. A vivarium holds python, elephant shrew, fire salamander, stick insect and yellow-bellied toad.
