Tierpark Cottbus and its collection

Tierpark Cottbus, opened in 1954, is a zoo in Cottbus, Germany.

Around 1,200 animals of about 170 species are kept, along with a petting area, a playground and catering. Waterfowl breeding is a speciality, with some 70 species held. Old trees and water bodies fed by the Spree shape the site.

History

The grounds once formed part of the outer Branitz park, landscaped in the nineteenth century by Hermann von Pückler-Muskau. The zoo was built through East Germany's national reconstruction scheme and opened on 1 June 1954. Erhard Frommhold took over in 1956 and raised it to become one of the eight state-recognised zoos of the GDR.
